Norsk Hydro has approved the construction of the Illvatn pumped-storage project in Luster, western Norway, the company's largest hydropower development in more than 20 years, which will add 107 GWh of annual storage. The system will add around 107 GWh of annual energy production and increase flexibility at Hydro's Fortun power operations.
(Photo: Narrativ/Hydro) Norsk Hydro, a Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company, is planning a 84 GWh pumped storage project in Luster Municipality, Norway. The Illvatn project, with an estimated price tag of NOK1.2 billion (US$113 million), is expected to begin construction in 2025, targeting 2028 or 2029 for full operation.
Hydro is investing a net NOK 1.2 billion after tax in the construction of the Illvatn pumped storage power plant in the Luster Municipality. The project is Hydro's largest hydropower development in over 20 years and will provide 107 GWh of new annual renewable energy for aluminium production in Norway.
In April 2020, the Norwegian Ministry of Energy granted Hydro a concession to develop the Illvatn pumped storage power plant. An application for a plan modification is currently under review by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
